Public Service Announce, it's your Shampoo

Well, actually, winter is here, but I honestly just couldn't miss out on the opportunity to say that.

If you're anything like me, you definitely don't need Game of Thrones to tell you that it's winter because my skin and scalp are so dry, which apparently is very typical! According to Mayo Clinic, "dry scalp is more prevalent in winter and is often marked by small white flakes caused by cold weather. One may also experience some itch and tightness with a dry scalp (but not excessive itching which is often caused by dandruff or eczema)."

But hey, before you run and grab that Head and Shoulders, there's something you should know. Your shampoo is actually contributing to your dry scalp. GASP. Yes, yes, I know, shocking, but true! Most of those shampoos and conditioners you buy from Walmart, Target, and CVS contain sulfates, which "are powerful detergents that work through a chemical reaction, in which they bind with the sebum on our scalp and with water." In other words, when you rinse out the shampoo, sulfates take all the oils with them, leaving you with a dry scalp.

Not sure who needs to hear this, but it is time to dump that shampoo, seriously. My hairdresser has been trying to tell me how bad conventional shampoo has been for years, but I honestly never listened (I thought she was just trying to upsell). One thing she and I have agreed on is that Under Luna is a game-changer. Under Luna is owned by Carly, who began creating her own all-natural hair care products in 2014, and the rest was history! Some of her most popular products include the Warrior Shampoo ($32), which "targets scalp issues such as irritation and is excellent for overall scalp health, balanced production, dandruff-prone, oily scalp, dry scalp. Reiki Infused and is all about bringing your hair back into balance!" The most impressive feature to me? I can pronounce every ingredient it's made with. What a concept! That's not all! Calling my fellow insomniacs and restless mind-ers, Under Luna has a special product just for us. The Lullaby Conditioner ($30) is "scented with essential oils of lavender + marjoram + chamomile; a sensory lullaby to help calm overactive minds and bodies." Even though I have my hairdresser's number on speed dial, I've found another fantastic source of hair care information! Under Luna's website, they have a Tips + Tricks section, which outlines how to take care of that dry scalp, combination hair, scalp detox, you name it, it's there!

I'll leave you with this: question everything. There's a reason why these major corporations are creating hair, skin, and body products that don't solve the problem or make it worse: sales. For businesses like Northeast Organica, Under Luna, Earth Harbor, and so many others, this is more than just their business. It's their livelihood, born from a passion and a yearning to make the world a better place and help their customer. Like always, remember, making a change in your life takes time, and it isn't easy. Sometimes, the best first step is throwing out that old shampoo and buying a new one.
